Chinese elders and Temple students sharing a traditional tea ceremony

Intergenerational learning came into practice in summer 2010, when AmeriCorps members at Coffee Cup were taught Tai Chi by the Chinese elders. The elders are 70-85 years old and have been practicing Tai Chi for 10 years. The elders take the Tai Chi workshops to other senior centers and resident homes in Philadelphia.

The elders at Mann Older Adult Center are rewarded and celebrated for their dedication to the ESL classes. “Teaching ESL with a health literacy focus has brought up many of the issues our students face in their everyday lives” – SHINE tutor

“We can help them become valuable citizens as we learn how to treasure them. As volunteers, we have the opportunity to help make the immigrant elder’s new environment more manageable and in return we are intrinsically rewarded” – SHINE tutor
